What is McDonald’s up to here?

I’m in Las Vegas for some client work, and I saw this billboard on the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard (the Strip). Do you find this odd? McDonald’s, the largest of large national fast-food companies, urging people to “shop local”?

I can’t figure out what to make of this. What do you think?

Shop Local may have been connected to the national drive that, on the third weekend of December, encouraged shoppers to think small box in your neighborhood and not large national chains for their shopping pleasures. McDonald’s probably saw a link with shop small/eat small since they are promoting “down sizing” your meal campaign … that’s all i can figure.

  2. All the McDonald’s in our region are locally owned by a gentleman who lives here. Eating at his restaurants means shopping local to me. It’s tough to say what’s local anymore. Franchises are not big box retailers are not mom ‘n pop shops… It’s a matter of spending thoughtfully.

Thanks, Adrienne. I know that McDonald’s restaurants are usually owned by franchisees. I understand your argument, and I appreciate it. I still think more money stays in local communities when you do business with a truly locally owned store. That said, you’ll still see me in a McDonald’s from time to time!
