Grammar Friday

Today’s two grammar tips:

  • Most abbreviations made with capital letters don’t need periods. Kurt Warner did not play in the N.F.L. He played in the NFL.
  • Capitalize the first word after a colon only if it begins a complete sentence. So, you would write, “Mom said that only one thing will earn me an increase in allowance: a consistently clean room.” Or, “Here’s the thing: You have to pass this exam, or you will be expelled.”
